Why is Colin Powell a Republican?

There is no post here. I am really, really stumped on this question. Why is Powell a Republican? Has he done a single thing that would peg him as a Republican (other than announcing that he was)? Can anyone point to a single instance in the past two years that would indicate the GOP has genuinely embraced Powell?

Why does he keep up the charade? Don't get me wrong -- I don't want him to go anywhere. He single-handedly rescued the country from a premature war in Iraq (and may yet prevent war from happening at all) and is swiftly moving to repair the damage that the Bush Keystone Brigade has wrought in North Korea. He is very likely the sole competent official serving in any prominent capacity in the Bush Administration.

But remind me again, why is he a Republican?
