Monday | October 07, 2002 Harkin unscathed by taping scandal Iowa Senator Tom Harkin has kept his big lead over his GOP challenger despite the taping controversy that "rocked" the state last week. (Actually, the only thing it seemed to have rocked was the screaming head pundits and GOP partisans.) Harkin has a 51-42 lead over Greg Gangske, including 9 percent of GOP voters. Harkin also leads amongst men, women and independents. In the governor's race, Iowa governor Tom Vilsack has also kept his comfortable lead over his GOP challenger, leading 50-40. Update: MyDD notes that prosecutors have dropped the taping case, finding no violations of state or federal law. Fact is, the individual doing the recording was invited to the meeting, and openly recorded Gangske's comments. I'm having a hard time finding this unethical, much less illegal. And, as the poll above bears out, most Iowa voters feel the same. Posted October 07, 2002 07:36 AM | Comments (0) |
