Electoral Vote Calculator

Introducing the latest feature to the Daily Kos. Take a look at the left-hand column, below the donation box everyone likes to ignore -- I have added an Electoral Vote Calculator.

It's obviously too early to start speculating about 2004. That said, it's never too early top start speculating about the 2004 results. Not only is it fun, but it allows us to take an easy look at the electoral picture in light of political developments coming to a neighborhood near you.

By my initial count, the Dems have a 270-268 lead. To reach that number I gave the Democrats CA, CT, DE, DC, HI, IL, IA, ME, MD, MA, MI, MN, NV, NJ, NM, NY, OR, PA, RI, VT, WA, WV, and WI.

I think of those choices, perhaps the most controversial would be MN and WV, but no more so than awarding AZ, KY, MO, and TN to the GOP.

The Senate picture does look bleak for the Dems in 2004, and could get worse if several Democrats retire as expected (more on that topic soon). So, the focus of Democratic Party efforts will be on the presidency and the House. The EC map doesn't look inhospitable to the Democrats. Given the right candidates, they will be competitive against even a popular Bush.
