Fitzgerald won't defend Illinois Senate seat

Illinois senator Peter Fitzgerald, a Republican in an increasingly Democratic state, will not seek reelection in 2004.

Fitzgerald was by far the most vulnerable GOP incumbent in a Senate election year clearly favoring the Republicans. Fitzgerald's withdrawl clearly helps his party's chances in Illinois.

As to who might replace him on the GOP ballot line, Archpundit bandies some names around over at the Political State Report.
