Garamendi is out

Good news for Democrats in California: Insurance Commission Garamendi, one of two prominent Democrats to announce for the race, withdrew. That leaves only Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante, Independent Arianna Huffington and Green Peter Camejo on the left.

Arianna originally said she didn't want to be a spoiler, and would not run if a prominant Dem joined the fray. Despite Bustamante's bid, she ran anyway, and my respect for her just took a hit.

As for the Republicans, they've got moderates Arnold and Ueberroth and wingnut faves Simon and McClintock. I hate to say it, but this election may come down to the lottery that determines which letters come first on the ballot.

In any case, let's not forget why this circus is in town: Republicans want regime change because California's surpluses turned into large deficits.

Great argument! I can't wait to use it against Bush in 2004.
