Election Day in Louisiana

By DHinMI

It’s election day in Louisiana, with primaries for hundreds of statewide, legislative, and judicial offices. Seventeen candidate are competing in the open primary for Governor; recent polls show Republican Bobby Jindal leading the field, with Democratic Lt. Governor Kathleen Blanco and Democratic Attorney General Richard Ieyoub close behind. The top two finishers will face off in the November 15 runoff.

Should Jindal make the runoff there will be a plethora of stories about him possibly becoming the country’s first Indian-American governor. On November 15 Louisianans' choice to fill the office once held by Huey Long could be between two Catholics—one (Jindal) the son of Punjabi immigrants, the other (Ieyoub) the son of Lebanese immigrants. Would that be proof of the changing South, or just another piece of evidence showing that in so many ways Louisiana is an American anomaly?

The polls close at 8:00 P.M. Central time. Result will be posted here.
