Do These Men Work for the Same Government?

This is Colin Powell in an interview on French radio today:

Powell said he was in "complete disagreement" with current French Foreign Minister Dominique de Villepin who recently suggested that Washington might be seeking the "remodeling" of the Middle East by deposing Iraqi President Saddam Hussein.

Powell reiterated that there was but one objective to Resolution 1441 — disarming Iraq. "I must nevertheless say that if we are incapable of forcing Iraq to respect its commitments, military action becomes necessary to topple this regime and destroy arms of mass destruction."

Powell concluded by saying that "the idea that we do this to remodel all the states of the Middle East is not correct and I think that Mr. de Villepin is wrong."

This is George W. Bush in a speech to the American Enterprise Institute last week:

"The current Iraqi regime has shown the power of tyranny to spread discord and violence in the Middle East. A liberated Iraq can show the power of freedom to transform that vital region."

And he said this:

"From Morocco to Bahrain and beyond, nations are taking genuine steps toward politics reform. A new regime in Iraq would serve as a dramatic and inspiring example of freedom for other nations in the region."

And, he said this:

"Success in Iraq could also begin a new stage for Middle Eastern peace, and set in motion progress towards a truly democratic Palestinian state."

These two really need to talk more often.. . .
